As cost of college tuition rises, is Florida doing all it can to help students?

The life of the average college student seems to revolve around four basic premises: school, social life, food and, perhaps the most important, money. In these tough economic times one can only hope that the cost of living remains affordable, especially to penny-pinching college students for whom bills and debts have only just started to manifest. However, the Florida legislature has proposed massive tuition hikes to occur over the next several years, which may be counteracting that goal. Florida currently holds the position of 45th out of 50 states for the cost of in-state tuition for Higher Education. This position allows for Florida high school students to remain in Florida for a more reasonable price, cheaper than the national average, as well as attracting a number of out-of-state students to come in as well. Despite the positive effects that this has on Florida’s economy and even taking into account work of the Florida Student Association with events like Rally in Tally, increases are inevitable.

Position of Student rep to Florida's Board of Governors under attack

Since his inauguration in January of last year, Florida Governor Rick Scott has been making enemies out of voters by consolidating control and money into his hands, especially when it comes to the economy and funding state-supported programs. However, one of the more recent fights to give Scott more power has been pushed forward less so by the governor and his staff, but by two state universities, the University of Florida (UF) and Florida State University (FSU). The House Joint Resolution 931 and its corresponding Senate Bill 1508 seek to remove the democratic power of the Florida Student Association (FSA) to elect its own student representative on Florida’s Board of Governors for Higher Education (BOG). The real kicker is that there seems to be a lot of support for it.
