CGA brings Free Market to New College

On Sun. Apr. 22, also known as Earth Day to the environmentally conscious, New College’s Council of Green Affairs (CGA) will be hosing the first-ever “Free Market” at the Four Winds — in collaboration with the Four Winds Make Fair — from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. It will be the final event of “Earth Week,” a week-long series of activities that the CGA will be sponsoring on campus to get students more involved in green thinking.

Second-year and Vice President of Green Affairs Taylor Filaroski explained in an e-mail that the Free Market is an exciting concept because “it’s based on a ‘gift economy’ in which [participants] give with no expectation of receiving anything in return or any ‘credit’ for giving.”

The free exchange of goods is no new concept to Novocollegians who regularly frequent the “free-gan” table or the free store. However, the Free Market is unique because it will offer an interactive trade among its contributors, something the aforementioned anonymous free services on campus do not.

“I want the [Free Market] to just be a fun event,” Filaroski added. “People can do a bit of spring cleaning [while also seeing] how their ‘waste’ could benefit others.”
