A Walmart Neighborhood Market in Winter Springs, one of 27 in Florida.
By as early as next fall, the empty lot of 3500 Tamiami Trail, former home to a Winn-Dixie store, will be replaced with a Walmart Neighborhood Market. On Aug. 10, the Sarasota Planning Board unanimously approved the plan for the store.
The new Walmart will be the first of its kind in Sarasota County, serving only as a grocery store and pharmacy. Since the forty-year-old Winn-Dixie store closed down last November, residents of North Trail neighborhoods have had to switch to Publix, the next closest grocery chain. While reactions are mixed about the Market, the store is projected to open about 100 full and part-time jobs, as well as construction jobs. Construction of the store will be alongside that of the parking lots and sidewalks.
Proposed store hours are from 6am to 10pm. The Walmart will be about 6,000 square feet smaller in size than the Winn-Dixie it is replacing, though additional parking spaces will be built.
