Director of ETS has been open since the summer, former librarian Cal Murgu was interim director until his departure in early October.

As the semester comes to a close and students prepare for Independent Study Projects (ISPs), the library is continuing its search for a new Director of Educational Technology Services (ETS). The increasing reliance on virtual means caused by COVID-19 and general worries about the need to modernize have featured heavily in the discussions surrounding who might fill the position.

New College has been searching for a new director since September via Ed Tech Recruiting. As for the responsibilities that can be expected of the job, the page advertises that it is a position that works with faculty to understand the teaching environment and how technology factors into it. The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably altered what will be required of the position.

“The rapid shift to online learning last spring resulted in a dramatic increase in support and training for faculty, staff and students in order to be able to teach and learn online,” Systems Librarian Tammara Race said. “We will still be teaching and learning online to some degree for the spring, and potentially into the fall.  A significant portion of the director’s position will continue to focus on the immediate need, but also on how to do all these things better.”

Library Services has already conducted Q&A sessions with two candidates virtually, Dr. Sara Baber and Tina Green. Both candidates’ resumes include a range of technological experience.

“Our search is not yet concluded, but we have had some very qualified applicants, and we are hopeful that we can have our Director of ETS ready to start at the beginning of the spring semester,” Rice explained.
