The College Hall Music Room was packed beyond capacity for the annual Student Leadership Recognition Awards Celebration, which took place on May 1. Members of the Student Affairs staff organized a night full of deliciously decadent treats and sweets for more than 70 attendees.

As award winners piled in, they were funneled through a buffet line to pick up a gift cup bearing the four winds logo, drinks, fruit and a delicious array of decadent gourmet cupcakes catered by Cakes by Ron and vegan cupcakes created by the formidable folks at the Four Winds.

Cupcakes and candy were in surplus for all those who attended.

This year, instead of just allowing members of the campus community to nominate whomever they wanted for whatever they chose, the Student Affairs staff sent out a list of pre-determined awards that students could nominate people for, as well.

Tables were filled with students, staff and members of the Foundation as Campus Life Coordinator Larry Locke introduced President Donal O’Shea to start the ceremony with a few words.

O’Shea started with a brief history of the event, which he said could only be traced back to about 10 years or so ago.

“But I think it’s important we recognize things that aren’t just academic at New College,” O’Shea told his audience. “When people think of New College, they think of the academics, but we are so much more than that.”

Over a hundred individual awards went out to students, clubs and events on campus. Recipients included the Phone-a-thon callers, the New College Fellows and a number of unique awards that were nominated by friends of the winners.

At the end of the ceremony, Konnie Kruczek the Student Life Coordinator, had these words to say:

“All of us in Student Affairs are honored to work here and work with you… All of these little things that you all do add up to make this place what it is.”
