Starting in 1979 the Sarasota Farmers Market is one of the oldest in Florida. In its over three and a half decade run it has continued to grow, bringing in over 10,000 visitors on Saturdays during peak season.
Every Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., dozens of vendors line the edges of Lemon Avenue at the intersection of Main Street. For many New College students this Saturday morning outing has become a favorite escape off campus.
While fresh produce is typically what comes to mind when thinking of a Farmers Market, the downtown vendors have a variety of offerings from artwork, handmade soaps and candles, artisan popsicles, hot sauce, guacamole, flowers and seafood. Tasty snacks and meals are also available in the form of freshly made empanadas, breakfast sandwiches and crepes. There is sure to be something for everyone.
