The AALC Introduces the Sensory Study Room

On Apr. 17, the Advocacy and Accessible Learning Center (AALC) announced via email the opening of their “Sensory Study Room” in Hamilton Classroom (HCL) 3. The Sensory Study Room is available for any student already connected to the AALC office, and can be booked via this link. Any students who aren’t registered with the AALC can email the office directly to request access.

The email was sent to students already connected with the AALC office and explained that the room was equipped with “comfortable chairs and couch, blankets and pillows, work desk and chairs, whiteboard and markers, multiple alternative forms of low lighting, study supplies,” and “snacks and fidget toys.”

“The idea for the Sensory Room came up a few weeks ago when the office next to the AALC became available,” explained AALC Director Jennifer Meier via email. “We asked to utilize the space in order to create a place where AALC staff could work with students. In addition, the AALC staff also wanted to maximize the use of the space by offering it to students connected with the office who are looking for a comfortable place to study.”

Meier explained that the room was a group effort at the AALC office and that, AALC coordinator, Bella Schuler was the one who put together the scheduling tool. Meier also said that the sensory items in the room were purchased using New College Foundation funds. The amount was not provided.

The Sensory Study Room is meant for any student already connected with the AALC office, in order to provide them with a “comfortable space to help students engage their senses and includes soft lighting, colors, sounds, soft play resources and sensory items.”
