Finding things to do in the SRQ area can be difficult, especially in the off-season or for students who haven’t stayed in Sarasota for the summer before. Here is an assortment of concerts and museums in the SRQ area for those staying around here this summer.

Museums:

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, 5401 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota, FL 34243

Considered to be the state art museum of Florida, the Ringling is within walking distance of New College and offers free admission to NCF students. It tends to be less crowded in the summer and the permanent collections are absolutely wonderful.

Eternal Offerings: Chinese Ritual Bronzes from the Minneapolis Institute of Art exhibition, June 9 – September 10

Skyway: A Contemporary Collaboration exhibit, June 24 – October 15, with a special talk by the artists on July 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Portraits exhibition (Works by August Sander, Andy Warhol, Mike Disfarmer, Cindy Sherman, and Diane Arbus), June 30 – October 29

Talk on ‘The Age of Bronze: Past and Present’ @ 10:30 a.m. on July 25 in the Chao lecture hall (located on the second floor of the Center for Asian Arts)

The Dali Museum of Art, 1 Dali Blvd, St Petersburg, FL 33701

The Salvador Dalí Museum is located near downtown St. Petersburg and houses the largest collection of Dalí’s works outside Europe. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday through Wednesday and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. It is a bit pricy – student ticket pricing is $17 – but definitely worth the money if you’ve never been. Admission is only $10 after 5:00 p.m. on Thursdays and you can also get unlimited entrance with a student membership for $40 per year.

‘Memory, Mind, Matter: The Sculpture of Eduardo Chillida’ exhibition, May 13 – September 24

‘Cult Classics’ @ the Dali 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month (on Thursdays the museum also stays open until 8:00 p.m. and offers a reduced admissions rate after 5:00 p.m.)

Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr NE, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

The MFA St. Pete contains exhibits spanning 4,000 years, including African art, European paintings & American photography. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday (with the museum staying open late until 8 p.m. on Thursdays) and then 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Tampa Museum of Art, 120 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa, FL 33602

The Tampa Museum of Art markets itself as a waterfront space with translucent ceilings and polished stone floors housing modern & classical art. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and is free to all students with a valid student ID.
