Sail team advances to next district fleet race

On Apr. 7, the New College sail team participated in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) fleet racing championship hosted by the University of Miami (UM).

In an e-mail to the Catalyst, New College Student Alliance (NCSA) President and sail team captain Michael Long wrote, “the NCF sailing team qualified for a national semi-qualifier sailing tournament in Miami, Florida. The tournament determines who advances to the final round of the national sailing championships.”

The sail team will thus advance to the next Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) fleet race. The ICSA National Championship will occur in May.

Other teams that participated in the recent regatta were those from Clemson University, the College of Charleston, Eckerd College,  Georgia Tech,  North Carolina State University,  Rollins College, The Citadel, the University of Florida,  the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the University of South Florida.

“We have consistently sailed better than we have in years past,” Long wrote. “NCF has never placed first in a regatta; however, our best finish was third place …. finishing third and fourth overall [in] regattas is an incredible accomplishment for our team and speaks to the dedication of people like [XXX-year] Elliot Evins and [XXX-year] Maria Phillips, who really got the team going in their first year.”
