Gallery space open for local artists

Peter Vince’s “Sarasota Swing” ($800) pictures a lighthearted caricature of Sarasota’s best-known demographic.

Members of Art Center Sarasota (ACS) contributed a total of 150 original works for the gallery’s latest juried exhibition, titled “Outside Looking In.” Judges awarded first through third place prizes, two “merit” nominations and twelve honorable mentions. Although the judges selected oil and acrylic paintings for the top three ribbons, the exhibit contains art media of all kinds, including sculpture, photography, digital painting and stoneware.

Douglas Teller, retired Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at George Washington University, served as one of the exhibit’s jurors. “This exhibition has much to entice the viewers,” he remarked. “It is varied with many well-crafted pieces. The prize winners are to be commended for their excellent entries.”

Almost all of the items in the exhibit are for sale, their prices ranging from under $100 all the way up to $25,000 for “Circus Set Up,” a woodcut by Frederick Gilmartin of Sarasota. Some pieces are even interactive: Jeff Hazelton’s painting “Cubist Planet” ($800) comes with a basket of 3-D glasses. When the viewer dons a pair, the vividly colored shapes on the canvas appear to leap right off the wall.

Anyone who wants to sample this collection of the “best of the best” produced by local artists will have to hurry down to ACS soon. On Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the gallery will accept submissions from all Florida artists –– not just ACS members –– for its next juried exhibition. New College’s own Professor of Sculpture Rick Herzog will act as one of the adjudicators for the exhibit, titled “The Fiber of our Being.” It will show from Nov. 18 to Jan. 8, 2011 and offers cash prizes to the top three submissions.
