Eight student discounts to start taking advantage of

College is almost universally known as a time where money may be tighter than usual. Teens are taught that after high school, the more schooling you receive, the higher your salary after graduation may be—but until the student reaches the aforementioned goal they are left to pinch pennies where they can. This article serves to showcase valuable discounts at local businesses where students may frequent or simply for some budget-friendly, good times on the weekends.

Mama G’s Coffee Bakery

Recently featured by the Catalyst, Mama G’s serves as an easily accessible and delicious option for students with or without vehicles, located at about a five minute walk from campus. The bakery and cafe lends to its appeal by offering local college students—including New College students—a 10% discount on orders.

Mama G’s is open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday—keeping true to cafe nature by closing early but not too early. Enjoy fresh baked goods, tea and coffee at student-friendly prices, along with an array of flavored syrups and unrelenting cozy vibes.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Located in Downtown Sarasota and Osprey, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens boast impressive greenery and scenery in the midst of the bustling city. It is recommended to check their website for the opening and closing times of their many indoor exhibits, as they may have differing times.

As for money, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Historic Spanish Point campus in Osprey offers students $5 off their usual adult ticket price of $16. However at their Downtown Sarasota campus, admission for students is $10 with a student ID.

TreeUmph! Adventure Course

This exciting venture is built for scaredy cats and for seasoned adventurers alike, located a ways down State Road 70 in Bradenton. Surrounded by tall trees and semi-dense Florida forest, the course boasts up to ten football fields of “challenging terrain and hundreds of aerial adventure games,” as stated on their website

TreeUmph offers students 20% off of tickets with use of code “FLSTUDENT” at their online checkout—along with an ID check upon arrival. The code can be used as many times per week, month and year as the student sees fit!

AMC Bradenton 20

It is a well-known fact to many that movie theaters give discounts to elderly folks, military personnel and host matinee showings at a fraction of the cost of a Friday ticket. Local AMC theaters—both in Bradenton and in Sarasota—offer student discounts, bringing an adult ticket total from $8.59 down to $6.49.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Disney’s Strange World are two examples of great movies to not miss out on, especially with a great deal.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

It’s a well-known fact on campus that all students, staff and faculty get free entry to the Ringling Museum that sits in between the Bayfront and Caples campuses. A sweet perk New College students can enjoy is the discreet side entrance near Cook Hall that is open during the museum’s hours of operation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Exhibitions filled with medieval to modern art and remnants of the Ringling Circus’ prime days await visitors. Feel free to end your visit by dropping by the Starbucks in the main reception area for a 10% discount with your student ID!

Asolo Repertory Theatre

The Asolo Rep hosts a wide variety of shows ranging from traveling Broadway shows to local dance company performances. Located directly behind the Jane Bancroft Cook Library and right in front of the Ringling Museum, it’s an easily walkable activity any day of the week.

As a student, performances are accessible by one of two ways: advance tickets or day-of rush tickets. Advance tickets can be bought at a 50% discount from the original price and day-of rush tickets can be purchased for $10 on the same day as the performance itself. Both options have a maximum of two tickets per order and require a student ID at will call.

Tampa Bay Lightning

A fan of hockey? The National Hockey League (NHL) season typically starts in early October lasting through early April—so there’s enough time to catch the next game. Although it is a longer-than-usual drive, New College students are known for their carpooling ventures to St. Petersburg and Tampa.

The Lightning in Tampa Bay offers students rush tickets for the 2022-2023 season at $20 and begin selling on game days at 10 a.m. and can be purchased in-person with a student ID or online through (.edu) email verification.

UNiDAYS

This may stray from the lovely list of in-person establishments provided, but it may prove to be a great resource for students. UNiDAYS is a website designed to connect students all over the United States to discounts online or in-stores. With a free membership, discounts from all industries are available from UberEats and Costco memberships, to Doc Martens and Samsung.

Within seconds of browsing the site, there’s hundreds of deals waiting to be applied. Just be sure to not utilize too many of them!
