bell hooks is a feminist, writer and social activist.

bell hooks, a renowned feminist, social activist and author, is spending a month at New College this year and for the next two years. This month, she is teaching several classes including Same, Equal, Different: Gender Studies in the US, National Discourse in Spanish Americas, Race and Ethnicity in Global Perspective, Religions in the African Diaspora, Literature of the Empire and Nations. Topics in Feminist Philosophy, Performance Studies, Critical Theory in the US: An Introduction and Contemporary Ethical Theory.

On Thursday, March 3rd at 4:00 pm, hooks will hold a question and answer session at the Writing Resource Center in the library — giving students a chance to learn from her breadth of knowledge about the craft of writing.

On Tuesday, March 8th at 4:00 pm, she will present a lecture at Mildred Sainer Pavilion entitled “Transforming Dominator Culture: The Way to Peace”.  hooks plans to hang out at Four Winds so that she can talk to students in a casual, intimate setting.

Executive Assistant to the Provost Nicole van der Berg stressed that hooks really wants to connect with students. Associate Professor of French Language and Literature reflected this as well, saying “bell hooks is gonna be here for the next month and she really wants to be able to have the opportunity to talk to students. People should not be strangers or be bashful, she’s there and she wants to interact with people. Students should realize that this is a phenomenal opportunity to be able to talk to a public intellectual of her stature in a sustained and informal way.”
