New College Relay for Life team sets fundraising goal high

The Relay for Life team walked last year under the coordination of Abigail Oakes.

New College New Hope, the campus Relay for Life team, raised $150 selling carnations for Valentine’s Day.
Second-year Courtney Huff-Oelberg, the team’s captain, said she hopes to raise 20 times that amount to reach their $3,000 goal by the Apr. 4th event.

“We had a booth at the Fun and Fitness Expo but we only made $12,” Huff-Oelberg said. “That’s better than
nothing though. Every little bit counts.”

To help reach their goal the group has partnered with New Prom and will be selling prom photos to raise money. The team of seven will also be going door-to-door to ask for donations in the next few weeks. All of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

The ACS will be hosting Relay for Life events all across the country including the one at the old Sarasota High School. This year’s theme is board games, and teams will be expected to participate in theme-related activities and laps. During the event at least
one member from each team must be walking laps around the track at all times to symbolize how cancer never sleeps.
