New College aims for Quidditch World Cup

The New College Quidditch team has started up for its second year. So far 10 people have joined but the team is open to all interested students and still seeks a captain.

“I’m hoping to set up scrimmages against Ringling for this semester,” said Director of Campus Recreation Colin Jordan. “Next semester, I’m hoping to get other schools involved so we can have several schools playing each other. And then, if we can raise enough money, we’d be able to send a New College team to the World Cup.”

The first annual intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup was held in 2007 at Middlebury College in Vermont, with 13 competing teams and over 800 spectators.  This year, the World Cup will take place in New York City on Nov. 13-14. As of the time of press, 62 teams from colleges and high schools around the nation have registered.

Additionally, Jordan said a New College alum who is currently working at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando might serve as a link to “arrange for a Quidditch competition … actually at the Harry Potter park.” But first, more muggles need to get involved.

No positions have been assigned and members have yet to practice. According Jordan, the team needs one student to step forward and take charge of organizing practice sessions so that matches against other schools can be arranged.

The team at Ringling College of Art and Design, which will compete in the World Cup this year, has offered to help the New College team “get off the ground,” said Jordan. They have offered to assist with practices and lend home-made broomsticks, but Jordan said he wants New College’s team to have all their own supplies soon.
