Headbands, leg warmers and community service: NCF 80s-themed Dance Marathon

Students, staff and anyone else who is ready to shake and shimmy will be at the second annual New College Dance Marathon on April 26 in the College Hall music room from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. At the 1980s-themed event, there will be music, dance lessons, snacks and raffle prizes. All the proceeds will go to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

“You can register for the event and participate without donating any money,” Volunteers in Service to America Volunteer Coordinator Representative Ashley Parks said. “But the $5 per person donation is encouraged and [donating] will make you eligible for the raffle prizes.”
Parks explained that volunteers, including a large group of resident advisors (RAs), have been soliciting local organizations and businesses for contributions to the event, such as gift cards to serve as prizes for the raffle, selecting the music and finding dance leaders from NCF and local dance studios.

“This year we will have 30-minute sessions that will include dance styles such as hip hop, tango, belly dancing and zumba,” second-year RA Destinee Aponte said. “But also incorporate techniques that go into fighting styles like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing and other flavors of martial arts.”

The Dance Marathon has increased from last year’s six hours to this year’s 12 hours.

“If you’re on a team, you don’t individually have to dance for 12 hours,” Parks said. “But someone on your team has to be dancing the entire time.”

Dancers will be able to recuperate in a rest area and water station.
