Family Weekend 2011

Family Weekend is this weekend with events scheduled from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday Oct 2. Student Life Coordinator Beth Bowen, this year’s organizer of Family weekend, said that 120 parents and students have registered for the event. It costs each family member of an NCF student $10 to attend Family Weekend, but Family Weekend is free for students. Students need only e-mail Bowen or register for the weekend to attend its events and grab some free grub.

This is the first year that New College has worked with the Hampton Inn & Suites by the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport to accommodate parents and loved ones of New College students. The hotel is giving Family Weekend attendees $10 off its normal rate and will be hosting an Evening Social in one of its conference rooms on Friday night. On Saturday morning, the Alumni Foundation will host a brunch at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library and then a presentation will be held in the Teaching Auditorium entitled, “Now What? Paying for College in a bad economy.” A mid-afternoon ice cream social will give Novocollegians and their family members a chance to hear New College’s own band Passerine perform. Passerine features the musical stylings of Professor David Brain and NCF alums Sarah Stovall (’08) and David Baker (’07). After that, a panel of NCF alums will talk about their lives after New College.

A meet and greet brunch with President Gordon “Mike” Michalson, Dean Wendy Bashant and the Student Affairs staff will cap the weekend off.

“I think [Family Weekend] will be nice because we have a new staff at Student Services,” Bowen reflected. “Everyone in Student Services will be attending the events so it will be good for team spirit.”
