New College Student Alliance Co-presidents first-year Michael Long and third-year Oliver Peckham are creating a bulletin board for Hamilton “Ham” Center that will list local businesses that give discounts to New College students.

“We’re trying to get the biggest bang for our buck in terms of student government spending,” Long said during an interview with the Catalyst. In return for their support, Long plans to give the participating businesses a plaque and letter as tangible recognition.

The bulletin board would be, “very easy, very clean and very prominent,” Peckham said. It would be include a rolling list of the discounts available.

Long intends to scout for local businesses that New College students frequent and get them to offer 10-20 percent off their goods or services. Students would need to show their New College ID to receive the discount. “We are setting our goals a little bit high and I think we can achieve them,” Long said

Long plans to meet with at least 25 different businesses and will keep students updated with emails as they agree. Right now definite discounts include 10 percent off at Salem’s, 10 percent off at Perkins, 10 percent off at Scuba Quest, $5 admission to Selby Gardens and 10 percent off at Ben and Jerry’s.
