May 1, 2013 marked the public opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The library, museum and the Bush policy institute, are housed in the George W. Bush Presidential Center, located on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, Tex.

Former President George W. Bush and 43 local students – to represent Bush’s position as the 43rd president – were among the first public visitors. The students were all from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and were chosen by their superintendents to be present at the opening day and ceremony.

A dedication ceremony for the center featured Bush and President Barack Obama, as well as former presidents Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Bush’s father, George H. W. Bush.

The museum includes exhibits on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and the historical Florida recount of 2000, among many other historical events of Bush’s eight years in office.

The library is home to millions of Presidential records from the years in which the U.S. was under the Bush Administration. On January 20, 2009, the National Archives and Records Administration began the long and arduous process of transferring the documents for public view.

According to the library and museum spokesman, John Orrell, about 300,000 visitors are expected annually.
