On March 12, the Time Sifters Archaeology Society and the New College Public Archaeology Lab hosted Archaeology Fest, an event giving visitors a chance to tour the Lab, attend various lectures, interact with artifacts, throw an atlatl and observe demonstrations including weaving and indirect cooking. The event was part of Florida Archaeology Month, which aims to familiarize Floridians with archaeology, the history of the state and the importance of historic and archaeological preservation.

Archaeology Fest also offered its visitors free food, resulting in the consumption of 150 free hot dogs during the events’ 10 a.m. start time to its 1 p.m. close.

“It was great to see the community turn out for Archeology Fest,” Baram told the Catalyst. “My Time Sifters colleagues estimated nearly two hundred people came. I noticed the diversity of ages: from little kids throwing with the atlatl and weaving with native plants to grown-ups asking about Florida’s archaeology and the identification of artifacts.”

The next Archaeology Month event at New College is a discussion in the Dialogues with Florida’s Past lecture series entitled “Lessons for the Environment” with Craig Pittman and William Marquardt at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion at 6 p.m. on March 16.
